What We Do

What We Do

Global Michigan helps facilitate education abroad travel for students, staff, and faculty. It is our mission to provide knowledge, support, and resources that connects the U-M community to international travel opportunities.

Consult

We consult students, staff, and faculty in two major areas: education-abroad program design and international travel health and safety. Ways we consult:

  • Promote awareness of and compliance with U-M international travel policies
  • Co-explore program models, locations, budgets, and timelines
  • Offer destination-specific resources and guidance
  • Facilitate international travel registration for U-M travelers
  • Provide 24/7 support for faculty, staff, and students experiencing crises overseas

Support

We offer support to study-abroad participants via pre-departure preparation and infrastructure and systems training. Ways we support:

  • Provide support and training for the campus-wide engaged learning system, M-Compass
  • Assist with promoting programs and funding opportunities in M-Compass
  • Partner with U-M units to develop workshops for program leaders and participants covering health and safety, cultural inclusivity, group management, and travel planning
  • Advise students pursuing independent experiences abroad

Connect

We connect study-abroad participants at every level with international agreements and professional development. Ways we connect:

  • Facilitate connections with international partners
  • Establish agreements for activities such as academic collaboration, education abroad, student exchanges, and visiting scholars
  • Convene numerous committees and working groups that guide and support the University’s Global Engagement initiatives
  • Bring together international education professionals to share resources and best practices

Assess

We assess the study-abroad experience through reporting and data requests and risk assessments. Ways we assess:

  • Manage institution-wide reporting on university engagement abroad
  • Respond to data requests related to engaged learning and travel abroad
  • Monitor health, safety, and security conditions abroad, which shapes the risk evaluation process for destinations
  • Review travelers’ risk assessment and mitigation strategies for their destination(s) through the safety plan/travel health plan process
